Reagan's need to include the Christian Coalition, and his policies of letting Religion in the form of the Evangelical movement has destroyed the Republican Party. Only Reagan had the force of personality to keep the Evangelicals under control, the analysis of Romney's Mormonism in public discourse in the primaries was a vivid example of what happens when the Scopes trial monkeys run wild, it's disgusting and abhorrent to any mainstream Christian. The elements that are leading the Christian Wing of the Republican party are the Billy Sunday Tent show, snake oil revivalist that anyone with any education rejects as worse than Wasilla Hillbillies And Ronald Reagan was not one of them, get rid of them or stay in the wilderness.
